Mayors Take Education Initiatives on Tour

Politico Pro: Education—blurb from today’s Politico Pro (with link to article)

TODAY IN DENVER: Mayors from four cities kick off a tour to talk education reform – and, they say, move beyond traditional talking points in the movement. Public events begin Thursday. More from Pro Education’s Stephanie Simon: “Denver Mayor Michael Hancock plans to show off a high-performing district school and talk about his efforts to encourage city recreation centers to mix academics in with their after-school and summer programs. Mayor Angel Taveras of Providence, R.I., is eager to take his fellow mayors to see several community schools that offer a rich array of services for low-income families, including health clinics, counseling, adult literacy lessons and help finding affordable housing. And San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro wants to showcase the expanded early childhood services his citizens agreed to fund with a sales tax increase. He will also talk about his efforts to bring more high quality charter schools to the city… The tour will also stop in Sacramento, with participation from Mayor Kevin Johnson, who is married to former D.C. public schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee.” The story: http://politico.pro/17JbVme
